How to Help A Friend

If your friend has been sexually abused:

  • Believe your friend. There may be those who act as though your friend is lying or has done something wrong. She or he will need your support.
  • Listen carefully and don't laugh. People often laugh when they are nervous or embarrassed.
  • Help your friend report to someone who can help: a counselor, school nurse, parent, child protective service worker, teacher, or police officer. Click here to find out how to report.
  • Let your friend know that the abuse is not his or her fault. Sexual abuse victims often feel like they've done something wrong.
  • Be confidential and protect your friend's privacy. Don't let it get all over school. If the whole thing is really bothering you, talk to a trusted adult about it.
  • Let your friend know you care. Sexual abuse is hard to talk about. Support her/him for making the decision to tell.
